Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor credited Ghana's significant gold export earnings in 2024 to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, under which large-scale mining companies were required from November 2023 to sell 20 per cent of their refined gold to the Bank of Ghana before exporting the remainder, while licensed small-scale miners and Community Mining Schemes were required to sell to the government through the Precious Minerals Marketing Company.

Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Jinapor says Dr Mahamudu Bawumia conceived Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme while heading the Economic Management Team during the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war. The programme, launched June 17, 2021, allowed the Bank of Ghana to purchase gold locally from licensed aggregators and mining companies, and had increased reserves from 8.77 tonnes at launch to less than double that target by December 2024.

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has assured that non-interest banking will not replace conventional banking but will provide an alternative financial option for those interested, while conventional banking customers retain access to existing services. Dr Asiama said the central bank regulates financial institutions and products, not religion, and dismissed concerns that non-interest banking would give one religion an advantage in Ghana's financial system.

He said the Bank of Ghana has engaged various religious groups to ensure the framework is inclusive and respectful of Ghana's religious diversity.
