Children as young as 10 are becoming severely addicted to cannabis in parts of the Volta Region, with producers processing raw cannabis into toffees and soft drinks marketed to unsuspecting children, according to the Volta Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission. The trend is most evident in Hohoe and Kpando municipalities, as well as North Dayi, South Dayi, and Afadzato South districts, with cannabis syndicates selling the substance to clients in Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and other parts of West Africa.

A dispute over traditional authority and jurisdiction over Avega and surrounding communities between the Ave-Dakpa Traditional Council and the Avenor Traditional Council has prompted Akatsi North District Security Council and Akatsi South Municipal Security Council to ban all traditional festivals and customary rites in the area. The matter has been brought before the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.
