At the African Union's first Extraordinary Summit on health in Accra, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that declining international funding threatens Africa's progress against HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and other diseases, urging African leaders to prioritise health sovereignty and increase domestic investment in healthcare systems.

A PATH and Impact Global Health report finds that half of approved diagnostics for six priority epidemic diseases (mpox, dengue, cholera, bacterial meningitis, malaria, and Ebola) require laboratory infrastructure most African primary health facilities lack, with the figure rising to 88% for Ebola. Since 2015, funding for developing tests for these diseases has fallen by more than half.
