Ghana must end galamsey to honor crash victims, activists say
On the first anniversary of an August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, Awula Serwah, coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, called for decisive action against illegal mining, describing it as an "ongoing ecocide" and arguing that Ghana owes it to all who have died from the practice—including children in mining pits, mothers from mercury poisoning, and police officers drowned pursuing miners.
