OpenAI's AI chatbot tool that experienced unexplained increases in goblin and gremlin references in its responses.

OpenAI discovered that ChatGPT and GPT-5-powered tools were producing unexpectedly high numbers of goblin and gremlin references—up 175% and 52% respectively since November—which the company attributed to an inadvertently incentivized "nerdy personality" trait and took steps to correct.
