Ghana Prisons Service — government agency managing prisons and inmate rehabilitation across regions, partnering with educational institutions on vocational training and welfare initiatives.

The Ghana Prisons Service has expanded rehabilitation and vocational training programmes, partnering with Cape Coast Technical University to offer fashion design, welding, culinary arts, ICT skills, and graphic design to inmates. The Service has also issued a public warning against online impersonation scams targeting citizens, and continues receiving donations of medicines and learning materials to support inmate welfare.

Seventh batch of Ghanaian pilgrims departs for 2026 Hajj

The News

The seventh batch of prospective Hajj pilgrims from Ghana's Northern Region has departed for Saudi Arabia to undertake this year's pilgrimage. A total of 16 flights are expected to airlift pilgrims from across the country, with more than 3,000 pilgrims anticipated from Tamale.

  2. Prison official urges inclusion of prisons in school feeding scheme

    The Deputy Director of Prisons (Central Region) has called for prison schools to be incorporated into Ghana's national school feeding programme, arguing that adequate nutrition would improve inmates' concentration, learning, and vocational training participation while supporting rehabilitation and reintegration. He noted that while the government increased the daily feeding grant for inmates from 1.8 pesewas to GH¢5, this amount remains insufficient for providing adequate meals.

  1. Ghana Prisons Service warns against impersonation scams online

    The Ghana Prisons Service has issued a public disclaimer warning citizens against impersonation and fraud on social media, where individuals are falsely posing as officials including the Director-General to solicit money and personal information. The Service stressed it does not authorise any individual to solicit funds on its behalf through unofficial channels and urged the public to report suspected fraudulent activity to police or official Prisons Service channels.

  1. Winneba Prison donates items and cash for Aboakyer Festival

    The Ghana Prisons Service in Winneba donated two crates of canned Malta Guinness, three packs of bottled water, and cash to the Effutu Traditional Council to support preparations for the 2026 Aboakyer Festival. The acting Officer-In-Charge also invited prison officers to assist with ushering duties at the Grand Durbar scheduled for May 2, 2026.

  1. Security agencies join Winneba clean-up ahead of Aboakyer Festival

    Personnel from Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service joined the Effutu Municipal Assembly on April 27, 2026, to clean drains and collect refuse in Winneba as part of preparations for the Aboakyer Festival. The exercise aimed to improve environmental sanitation and public health ahead of the annual celebrations.

    Pharmaceutical company Ernest Chemists Limited donated assorted medicines including blood tonics, pain relievers, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs to the Ghana Prisons Service to support a medicine bank initiative for inmates and officers. The donation was presented at the Prisons Service headquarters in Accra and forms part of the company's corporate social responsibility.

    The Ghana Immigration Service Governing Council is pushing Operation Secure Our Borders (SECOBOR), a public-private project designed to mobilise resources for officer welfare and border control. The GIS chairman cited weak border controls as exposing Ghana to smuggling, human trafficking and illicit trade, and requested retention of 80 per cent of internally generated funds for five years to address resource and logistical constraints.
